Seal the Roof Before the Next Gulf Storm Rolls Through

Water damage is the most expensive thing that happens quietly to an RV. Around Conroe, storms roll up from the coast with hours of sideways rain, and any seam that was marginal in March becomes a leak in September.

Where to look

Every penetration through the roof is a candidate: vent flanges, the AC gasket, the refrigerator vent, antenna bases, and the front and rear caps. Look for hairline cracks, chalky sealant, and any spot where the lap sealant has pulled away from the edge.

What to use

Match the sealant to the roof. EPDM and TPO membranes want a self-leveling lap sealant; fiberglass roofs take a different product entirely. Using the wrong one looks fine for a season and then peels.

Inside clues

Soft spots in the ceiling, a musty smell after a hot day, or staining around a vent frame all mean water has already been inside for a while.
